What is the number one benefit of practicing Pilates?

There are many benefits of practicing Pilates consistently, with increased strenth and flexibility the most often touted, as well as the famous core strength. But I believe one of the most overlooked benefits of Pilates is the increased body awareness that comes quickly after starting your practice, often after the first few sessions. This body awareness will be with you all day every day, giving you a deeper understanding of the ways in which you move, sit, rest and play.
Take, for example, the elusive concept of "posture". When asked, most people would define "good" posture as standing or sitting up straight, but posture is dynamic. How you weight bear through your feet, the way you hold your pelvis, the position of your ribcage stacked over the pelvis, the position of the head and shoulders, are all elements of your dynamic position. Praciticing Pilates will bring increased awareness to all of these elements, and you will find yourself, almost subconsciously, becoming aware of how you hold yourself and the relative positions of all these body parts. With increased awareness, comes increased options for how you use your body. You will be more capable of choosing how to best use your body to serve you in your day to day life.
Ultimately, yes Pilates will certainly improve your strength and flexibility, but it is the feeling of connection to your body, the awareness of your parts, and an appreciation of what your body can do, that truly brings benefits that extend far beyond the rolling up of the mat.
