With the boom in Pilates in recent years, there has been a corresponding increase in Pilates teacher training courses. Pilates is an unregulated industry, meaning anyone can call themselves a Pilates instructor, whether they have completed a weekend course or a comprehensive training program involving hundreds of hours of practice and observation. It's true, that learning an exercise and then how to describe that exercise, is a skill that can be learnt fairly quickly, but an experienced and skilled Pilates teacher goes well beyond simply instructing a class.
What happens for example, if a certain movement doesn't feel right in your body? Does your instructor understand the exercise to such an extent that they can offer modications for your specific situation? Can they adapt the exercise for different skill levels within the same class, while maintaining flow and pace? Do they know and understand your exercise and injury history? Do they know if a certain exercise may have the potential to exacerbate an existing condition, and how to modify or vary accordingly? These are skills that come with years of teaching experience, of seeing hundreds of bodies in action, of understanding movement, and antatomy, and being able to incorporate all of that knowledge in a seemless manner, all the while keeping the session moving and creating a positive movement experience for each and every participant.
At The Pilates Approach, all sessions are taught by Tahlei, who has been teaching Pilates for over 10 years, and has worked with hundreds of bodies with all manner of levels and abilities. Tahlei holds both a Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction, and an Advanced Diploma of the Pilates Method, meaning hundreds of hours of study, observation and practice. With a commitment to continuing education, Tahlei has participated in countless workshops and courses, expanding her knowledge year on year. Tahlei is also a member of the Pilates Association Australia, a quick and easy way to check if your instructor is comprehensively qualified.
